New Jahra Medical City, Kuwait
The New Jahra Medical City in Kuwait is one of the largest healthcare development projects in the Middle East. As part of this landmark medical complex, Taiyo Europe completed the design, engineering, fabrication, and installation of a 3-layer ETFE roofing system covering the main atrium.
The project features approximately 4,500 m² of ETFE cushion roofing supported by 134 tons of structural steel, creating a lightweight and visually striking enclosure over the central gathering space, which has a gross area of approximately 5,000 m².
The roof utilizes a pneumatically stabilized 3-layer ETFE cushion system that provides excellent thermal performance while allowing abundant natural daylight to penetrate the interior. The transparent roofing solution creates a bright and welcoming environment for patients, visitors, and staff while reducing the reliance on artificial lighting.
Due to the lightweight nature of ETFE compared to conventional glazing systems, the supporting steel structure could be optimized, resulting in an efficient and elegant design capable of withstanding Kuwait's demanding environmental conditions.
Completed in 2019, the project demonstrates how advanced membrane architecture can enhance large-scale healthcare facilities by combining sustainability, functionality, and architectural excellence.
